Tree Planting

By the Fall of 2009, over 100 backyard trees have been successfully planted in backyards of  Harbord Village, Palmerston Residents' Association  Grassroots Albany - The Annex and the Christie-Ossington Residents' Association with the support of the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation grant. Here is a list of the tree planting activities since 2008:

Spring 2008
HVRA planted 45 new trees in neighbourhood back yards, all of them native species well-adapted to our climate and to city conditions.

Fall 2008
We put another 25 trees in the ground.

Fall 2009
A third backyard planting period was organized.

Spring of 2008 and Fall of 2009
Support was extended to neighbouring communities to share the TPTF grant.

One recommendation of the 2007 Inventory was to keep planting young trees to create a succession for the beautiful but aging large trees that characterize the area.

The Treeing the Village Committee worked tirelessly researching suitable trees to recommend to residents for planting, communicating with residents and absentee landords to encourage tree planting, organizing tree orders and volunteer digging teams, outreaching to neighbouring communities to organize a similar tree planting project.

With a grant from the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation, it has taken two years so far to organize succesful back yard tree planting in different tree planting seasons.

We have submitted our Backyard Tree Planting HVRA 2009 report to the City requesting an extension of time for the last order for backyard trees to be planted in the spring of 2010. More information will follow once we learn if the extension has been granted.

Photos below show three Harbord Village tree planting events including June 2009, when, using only financial donations from residents, we bought and planted 19 trees for the grounds of Central Tech School at Harbord and Lennox all along Borden Street.
