Dear HVRA Members
The question from our Treeing the Village Committee is this:

Do you want to help maintain the urban forest in our community?

Our Tree Inventory is now almost complete. At http://harbordvillage.com/trees., you can scroll down to see the 2007 report and associated files. Soon, the completed 2008 report will be posted there. Now HVRA's Treeing the Village committee is building on that work in two new and important ways.

1. Backyard Tree Planting: In Spring 2008, HVRA used a grant from the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation to plant 45 new trees in neighbourhood back yards. Many of your neighbours received trees worth from $100 to $200 for a token payment of only $20. Now you have another chance to get your own backyard tree. Download the Tree List found on the HVRA website to see which trees we recommend as most suitable to city conditions, along with links to photos and further information about each type. If you want to plant a tree this Fall, we need to hear from you by September 26. And volunteers to help plant the trees on Saturday October 25th are especially welcome. Contact Samiha Sayed at 416 531-8651 or samsayed@aol.com.

2. Village Arborist: After interviewing many companies, we recently selected Bruce Tree Expert Company as our Village Arborist. Besides providing a full range of tree services, the company has a long history of improving urban forests and an impressive educational focus. They will provide a variety of services on the properties of participating households at a discount rate. To sign up for a free inspection, contact Bruce Tree Expert Company at 416-252-8769 or by email (contact@brucetree.com) OR stop by their table at HVRA's Fall Fair at Ulster and Brunswick on Sunday, September 14th between 2-4 pm to meet them in person. It is important that you register with your Harbord Village address in order to enjoy their discounted services. If they can visit a number of properties in the neighbourhood in one day, you will avoid paying additional travel costs. The company can also provide advice and care on trees that are located on the City-owned portion of your front yard, if you fill out a City form in advance of the work being done. And this winter, they will conduct a safety audit of all the trees in the neighbourhood. If you have any questions, contact Tim Grant at 416-960-1244 or via tim@greenteacher.com..

Here is to a greener Harbord Village!
